Novel CCTV Fire Detection Technologies for Industrial Applications

The need for early flame detection coupled with reliable means for monitoring (viewing) and analyzing the event is desired by the high-risk industries. This is especially true for the oil and gas industry, the chemical process industry, and the waste disposal facilities, where the risk of a fire is extremely high; hence, the consequences of not being able to contain it may be catastrophic.

The requirements for fire detection should include the following core features:
a. Free of false alarm fire detection
b. Fast and reliable detection of outburst (ignition) of any fire
c. Fast and reliable locating of the fire event in the monitored area
d. Immediate transfer of all vital information to enable the control room and the emergency team to select the best response
e. Continuous monitoring of the situation

In light of these requirements, this paper describes the available optical flame detection techniques and their suitability for different environmental conditions. Various novel CCTV (closed circuit television) fire detection techniques will be discussed, including a new hybrid concept that combines optical infrared spectral analysis with a miniature CCTV system within a small and compact explosion-proof enclosure. This detector's IR sensors and spectral band pass filters have been carefully selected to ensure the greatest degree of spectral matching to the radiant energy emission of fire and the lowest degree of matching to non-fire stimuli. The miniature color video camera, activated by a unique algorithm once the spectral fingerprint of the fire has been identified, enables the user to investigate the monitored area in order to identify the fire's source and location. Furthermore, this detector's output is programmable to issue a live color video picture at all times, on request, or just when a fire is detected.
